Gracie was one of the privileged few to visit an orphanage in Batu Gajah whilst on sports tour in Malaysia during the October half term. The orphanage is home to boys and girls ranging from the age of 4-21 years old.
''For all of us coming from such privileged backgrounds and loving homes it was incredibly emotional to visit a place where, despite their lack of material things, everyone was so happy and delighted to see us. From the moment I arrived I was struck by an incredible feeling of warmth and care. All the workers were so loving towards the children and seemed to have an amazing ability to take care of every child, regardless of their age, background, or gender. I was immediately drawn to the youngest little girl called Angel. Together we drew pictures of the teddy I had given her and despite our language barrier I really felt I was able to connect with her and the other children on an emotional level. During our time we all played with the children and taught them English rhymes and songs. Everything we did seemed to bring joy to the children, and it was incredibly humbling to see such little things give them such great pleasure. At the end I really didn’t want to leave as I felt I had formed such a deep connection with Angel and the other children. For me this was one of the most special parts of the trip and is something which I will honestly never forget.
Truly incredible experience, I am desperate to visit the orphanage again.''
